Yard Sale

Here are Pat's crocks.   Several were sold yesterday.   I had a conversation with a lovely lady who is teaching herself how to make all kinds of relishes.  She told me she was experimenting and was enjoying her new attempt to make pickle relish and tomato relish.  She will attempt pickles soon.    I showed her a very old copy of a cook book which had an entire section about canning so she bought it.

This table got a lot of attention but never sold.    Most of the items went as people seemed to be looking for the older glass bowls this year.    Pat had a couple of matched sets that went quickly and there was a covered casserole dish that went too.  Just after it was sold another lady came and asked if we had a covered casserole dish and was disappointed to find out we had just sold the only one we had.  I am laughing as the lady who bought it, and several other pieces, needed help with her big copper kitchen garbage can filled with her smaller purchases and I volunteered son John to help her load her purchases, not knowing she had no car but walked to our sale. He didn't blink an eye but escorted her and her children down the street to their house.   Of course I forgot to pack the lid of the casserole dish and she came back for it later.

There were over a hundred sales in town and not as many people this year.   They were not spending as much and bartered more.    The books were very slow to move and we did sell some but no where what we hoped.  One man looked over the children's books as he wanted some to read to his grandchildren .  He made a remark about some of the books out there today and he wasn't happy with them.   His wife was pleased with his choices and remembered reading some of the old stories in her childhood.

We  have had a week of very hot weather which is unusual for the coast.   It was a ninety degree day with a soft wind .  You can bet we moved with the sun.   The wind did not pick up so we were very lucky.    John's idea of filling an ice chest with bottles of water  was a hit and we sold out.   All in all it was a fun day and I think we have as much to sell all over again but Pat says no way . It was extremely hard for her as heat and M.S. do not mix well.      She will take a week or two to go through to find what has some value and put it on e bay.  The rest will be donated to a cause and the books will go for the library sale.   I think this is our last yard sale and we will miss having them, but it is a tremendous job to get the 'shop' ready for the people who come from all over the different towns to the hundred sales here in Brookings every year.   We do meet and greet a lot of different folks and it makes for a fun day.     All of our hard worked paid off and we are thankful John was here to help.  He made it much easier for both Pat and myself.  Pat's neighbor and friend Katie came over to shop early and decided to stay and help for the day.     She is having a sale in a few weeks so we will  go and help her out if she needs us.    Friend Marcia came to help us too and she is having a June sale so we are really not retired yet.

The crowd was different this year.  Some of the ladies came dressed in long dresses of mismatched colors that was surprising and interesting to see.    Most had tattoos which surprised me.   Only one or two had a dog in tow, one a black and white bull dog with a face to stop a clock but well behaved as it pulled its mistress through the glass ware and didn't seem to care if she wanted to take time to look or not.   It takes all kinds to make our world go around, I just can't understand why anyone would want to lug an animal around where there are crowded faces and places.   So now you are all caught up on our yard sale.    You might want to look around your neighborhood and see if there are any sales going on.   Who knows, you might find a real treasure.      If you are experiencing a very hot summer day, be sure and take a bottle of water along with you.    Don't forget your smile and hugs. . . anticipation is half the fun.  Go...enjoy!  Hugs. to all.
